Better Streets for more Trees in San Francisco!

Check out Better Streets, which focuses on building better streets for San Francisco.  Above is what Folsom Street would look like trees.  (Take a look at the Street View of current Folsom Street on GoogleMaps here)

As you can see, there’s still a lot of room for improvement for the 2nd greenest city in the United States.

Here’s an excerpt from the About Page:

The Better Streets Plan will create a unified set of standards, guidelines, and implementation strategies to govern how the City designs, builds, and maintains its pedestrian environment.

The Better Streets Plan process brings together staff of multiple City agencies to comprehensively plan for streets. The Plan will seek to balance the needs of all street users, with a particular focus on the pedestrian environment and how streets can be used as public space. The Plan will reflect the understanding that the pedestrian environment is about much more than just transportation – that streets serve a multitude of social, recreational and ecological needs that must be considered when deciding on the most appropriate design.

The Better Streets Plan will carry out the intent of San Francisco’s Better Streets Policy, adopted by the Board of Supervisors on February 6, 2006.

San Francisco Solar Map shows Solar Installations in San Francisco!

The SF Solar Map shows you solar installations in San Francisco plus the ability to calculate energy savings if you did install solar panels on your roof.  We don’t get much sun here but still, there’s enough sun to save most houses power.

What a great selling tool for people interested in purchasing PV, but are unsure whether they have the right roof for solar. Neighbors can see who in their area has solar, take a peek at their system, and decide whether they think it was a clean install, compare with other installs and determine whether its even going to be visible from the street.

Jared Blumenfeld, Director of the SF Department of the Environment, says that they are aiming to put solar on 10,000 rooftops by 2010. To help encourage people on the fence, the site also has testimonials by area residents with installed solar systems, dispelling myths like San Francisco is too foggy for solar and whether its noisy or a bother to have solar.

Casa Verde - Green Home in Mission District!

Casa Verde - Green Home in Mission District!

My dream is to own a green home in San Francisco. Of course, I’d like to own a home near the Golden Gate Bridge where price tag of houses are more than at least $2-3 million.

In the meanwhile, you can enjoy green homes such as this one featured in the Mission District.

Designed by architect John Lum, the building — which includes a main house and an apartment — occupies a 50- by 70-foot corner lot. Lum’s plan maximizes natural light and airflow on each of three levels, with rooms leading off an open, central stairway made of glass and steel. The main living and dining areas and kitchen are on the top floor to take advantage of views across the city. “It’s kind of an upside-down house,” Lum explains. “The public spaces are at the top, and the more private master suite and guest rooms are below.”

But what makes the home truly groundbreaking are the eco-features it incorporates, some of them still in experimental stages. For example, hot water will be provided by rooftop tubes that collect solar energy, says Matt Golden, founder and CEO of Sustainable Spaces and a project consultant. The home’s electricity will come from SunPower solar panels and a wind turbine installed in the backyard — a power source so unusual in San Francisco, the builder had to get a one-year provisional test permit before it could be installed. A high-tech resource-monitoring system will keep tabs on energy and water use.
