Biking in San Francisco is Still Horrible!

Biking in San Francisco may still be one of the worst ideas you can think of although it sure can beat some traffic if you live close to downtown.
I have heard more than enough stories of bikers being run down by cars. Although I myself resort to a motorcycle here and there, it’s clearly not the best place for bikers.
Apart from being dangerous, bikers in San Francisco also do not get the full protection of the law, evidenced by this article:
Bike theft may seem like petty street crime, but it’s actually a humming illegal industry. Consider this: thieves steal nearly $50 million worth of bikes each year in the United States, far outstripping the take of bank robbers, according to the FBI. And in San Francisco’s rich bicycling culture, thieves have found a gold mine. About 1,000 bikes are reported stolen in the city each year, but the police say the actual number is probably closer to 2,000 or 3,000, since most people don’t file reports.
My honest suggestion for bikers?
Be a very cautious biker, watch out for cars whenever you make a turn. The city is too crowded and there’s way too many other, more important things for police to chase after.
Better yet, don’t bike like me. Take any chances of getting hit by a stupid driver out of the equation.
If you really want to bike, I do highly suggest moving to a more biker friendly city like Davis, California, where all bikes are required to register just like cars and cops have nothing to do there but keep the biker laws healthy and happy.
